KEVIN FERRER steered the UST Growling Tigers back to the Final Four with a win over the struggling UP Fighting Maroons, 83-76, Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Ferrer tallied a career-high in scoring with 29 points to go along with a season-best 14 rebounds for the Tigers, who bounced back from a 74-80 loss to Ateneo last Wednesday.
After being down by 10 entering the final period, UP rolled on a run to cut UST’s lead to just three, 66-69.
Ferrer and Ed Daquioag then scored the Tigers’ next seven points to push the lead to 76-68 and essentially put the game out of reach.
Louie Vigil chipped in 16 points for the Tigers. Daquioag also added 15.
Jett Manuel posted 21 points and eight rebounds for UP in the loss.
The Tigers shot better from the field (39.6%) and from beyond the arc (34.6%) compared to the Maroons (36.9 FG%, 21% from three).
The win assured UST a spot in the Final Four alongside idle Far Eastern University Tamaraws (9-1) after finishing last season at sixth with a 5-9 record.
They will next play against the UE Red Warriors on Nov. 4, 2PM at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
