THE UST Growling Tigers were unable to mount a comeback and saw their streak end at five wins against the Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles, 74-80, in the UAAP Season 78 men’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum last Oct. 21.
The Tigers cut the deficit to just three, 50-53, in the third quarter after trailing by as much as 17 but failed to keep up as the Eagles countered with a short 7-2 run to keep them at bay.
Ateneo put the game out of reach after a three pointer from Arvin Tolentino gave the Eagles a 14-point lead, 73-59.
Ed Daquioag led UST with 19 points, while rookie Marvin Lee added 15.
Kevin Ferrer, who struggled before making a field goal before late in the fourth quarter, finished with 13 points.
Tolentino top scored for the Eagles with 20 points. Von Pessumal also chipped in 16 markers.
UST dropped to the second spot in the standings with an 8-2 win-loss record behind FEU (9-1).
They will look to bounce back and secure a Final Four slot against the UP Fighting Maroons on Sunday, Oct. 25, 4PM at the Mall of Asia Arena.
